40 mph winds at Boca Chita Key

Cabin Boy Bob (We mean Captain Bob) ,                      1-5-2014 – 1-9-2014

What a start of the 2014 New Year. I left 20 degree weather MSP, MI for  what became a weird cold and rainy week in Florida. Just call me Stormy 2 I must have the weather with me.

All I can say is I’m glad we were able to complete docking training before the wind blew at 40 mph on The island of Boca Chita Key.  We even docked blindfolded!

As intimidated as I was to be aboard, I never felt insecure with our teacher Captain Bob. Thank you for welcoming us.

The stories on Boca Chita were great. Captain Bob told us about the ghost of Ms. Honeywell and right at the punch line in came a gust of wind that blew out the 2 candles leaving us in the dark what an ending. If you believe in ghost you could have believed that story to be true.

Great time,

Docking the Boat, Blindfolded

Hi Captain

Wow, what a wonderful 4 days learning new skills. My wife and I feel a lot more confident chart plotting and over all boat handling. Betty was even able to dock the boat blindfolded and made it look easy after only 3 tries. We learned about buying a trawler and the use of a broker and financing a boat. We both feel like we are one step closer to buying a trawler. The scenery was fabulous and it was very relaxing being anchored out at several locations. Captain Bob was an excellent cook and really exceeded all our expectations.

Thank you

Our biggest fear was destroying the Miami Mermaid …

Hi Captain Bob,

Before we could leave to catch our plane from Grand Rapids to Ft Lauderdale we had to shovel the previous nights three inches of snow from our sidewalks. It was 25 degrees, we drove to the airport and three hours later we stepped off a plane to 75 degree bright and sunny weather in Ft. Lauderdale, the trip was already a success.

Then we met Captain Bob. After being on board our first night, we already learned so much that we could not imagine we would not be able to retain everything. My wife was so overwhelmed with information that I actually think I heard her say I’ll never ask Mark to put the seat down again! But we became more comfortable as the night went on, we learned more about the water system on board. The details were incredible. I think we started to drive Captain Bob crazy with all our questions, since most of them were not about the topics he was talking about. Then, his Marine Corps training kicked into place and he would get us back on track. For me, it was like being trained by my older brother.

The trip really began the next morning. Early classes followed by taking charge of the helm ourselves. Our biggest fear was destroying the Miami Mermaid but after six hours later we were comfortable navigating with no problem.

Boca Chita Island was awesome. We had our docking lessons here and our fears began to recede, as we became better and better bringing a 40 footer dockside. No damage done! In fact we were the first one’s to dock blindfolded and that we did it. Wow!

Our next day was gunk holing in and out of harbors, we became more and more efficient at navigating, keep in the white cause white is right. That night we anchored and rode out an incredible storm. We felt tremendous fear at first but Captain Bob talked us through and it all worked out perfectly.

The trip back to the Miami Mermaid’s home dock seemed like a breeze. We took the helm and brought her home. We felt comfortable at the wheel and on the charts. We no longer had fear of causing damage.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience’s with us. Yours is a life “well lived”!

Trawler School was a roll of the dice for us

We went from Trawler School to purchasing our first boat — a 36′ Mainship – and we wouldn’t have dared without building our skills with Cap’n Bob.

Trawler School was a roll of the dice for us — and we rolled a winner. We loved Bob’s approach to teaching; we found his meals inspired, and the boat a great way for us to get a true sense of what it would be like to function in that space. I had hoped Trawler School would put my husband’s dreams of a boat to rest. Alas – we’re now through our first trawler season on the Hudson River and looking forward to many more. Cap’n Bob’s patience and focus gave us the confidence to take the leap. There wasn’t a day of our first boating season where we didn’t repeat some of Cap’n Bob’s instructions. He gave us the foundation to dream bigger while showing us some amazing sites like Boca Chita Key.

We experienced it all — wind, rain, currents — all in our Trawler School session — and it was worth every penny. From the homework assignment prior to school (charts! navigation!) to our return trip up the Intercoastal – we learned, we worked, we enjoyed, and it was all an unexpected delight. We’re realists — so if you’re looking to be waited on, this trip is not for you. But if you’re looking for what it might be like to learn and spend boating time at a comfortable pace – the time and money invested here would be well spent.

Captain Bob,

Our time on the Miami Mermaid was so great! We were educated in all aspects of trawlers, boating and buying. Learning to navigate and read charts was very valuable and fun for me and Debbi finding all the spots we visited on our trip. It has made us very confident and will be useful on our boat in the future.

All the beautiful places we visited (especially Boca Chita Key) will be treasured memories. We hope that the future holds many more.

Captain Bob loved my special homemade “Apple Pie” and we loved his cooking and candle light dinners.

All and all we give Captain Bob’s Trawler school a big fat “10”, we are so glad we had the chance to navigate this adventure.

Great food, Captain Bob

What an excellent galley slave. We liked how he made us feel like we were alone on our own boat. Spending 3 days 4 nights was a great way to see how life would be on a Trawler. We have a lot more confidence navigating the boat and certainly a lot more knowledge of the boat’s systems.

Had a great time, Good luck.

When we look back from one week ago and think about our expectations were for trawler school. Rick and I agree that these 4 days with you far surpassed what we expected. I’m amazed at how much time we spent at the helm….Alone! What a confidence builder.

The meals were all delicious and our classes were all enthusiastic and informative, you certainly know how to wake up sleepy students for your 9:00am class.

So much great advice on how to go about our trawler search. We certainly have a great start. Thanks for having lots of hot Coffee ready every morning when we awoke.

All the best

Dear Captain Bob             6-24-2013 – 6-28-2013

We thoroughly enjoyed Trawler school this week. We are experienced sailors, but we had no experience on a trawler or the Intercostal waterway. While it may take Jeff a little while to distinguish between Sedans, Trunks ect. But I can tell the difference between all 4 models! We enjoyed being on a trawler and learning how to handle one. We really appreciate the knowledge we have gained about Trawlers.

Thank you for all the classes you provided and for the special “class” for us that was unexpected!! We are sure you will remember us as the ones that vacuumed out our bilge onboard our boat. A good bilge is a dry bilge. Thanks for everything.

Captain Bob                                      11-4–2013 – 11-8-2013

With 30 years of sailing experience behind me, my goal was to gain the knowledge and experience to make an educated decision, which type of the four Trawlers would suit me best. The time spent handling the Miami Mermaid and navigating the Intracostal water ways was a new experience for me.Trawler School has answered all my questions!

I was also impressed with the great meals that you prepared. If you ever decide to take up a second line of work, there are several restaurant’s in the area that could/would welcome you to there staff.

It was a pleasure to make up the anchor bridles for the Miami Mermaid. I did not think that there was anything about anchoring that I could show or do for you.

Looking forward to spending some time with you and Trawler school with my significant other when we are in town.

My very best wishes.

Due to a lousy flight I arrived at Trawler school in  a terrible mood. took till the next morning till all was gone and all was good. We have considering purchasing a trawler for some time. The training is making that decision that much easier. It’s hard to teach old dogs new tricks. We certainly learned a lot from Captain Bob. Will recommended him and the Miami Mermaid to anyone thinking about Trawlering. What a wonderful experience.

Captain Bob We will keep you updated on our quest to finding a Grand Banks.

Hey Captain Bob          4-28-2013 – 5-2-2013

Great time, beautiful sights, new horizons – thanks for opening a new chapter in our lives. We will think of you many times in our years of trawlering ahead. Atta boy Captain Bob!

What a great course. You took a couple of very green sailors wantabes and turned us into future boaters. We now know how to navigate, read charts, the engine room, electronics, how to stay in your own lane! Docking, anchoring and so much more. Wonderful food and camaraderie and a joke a minute. Thanks so much for giving us confidence to think we can really do this on our own.

Best of luck

Captain Bob

Thanks so much for the instruction’s on electronics and all the other important information. We had a wonderful time.

It was great to see Miami all lit up at night. All the anchorages were especially breathtaking. We came because although we’re ancient, were considering buying and living on a trawler. We hope to see you again.

Best of luck

Dear Captain Bob,                         4-15-2013 – 4-19-2013

Our mission to learn how to feel confident piloting and navigating a Trawler… Mission accomplished!! When my husband told me he wanted to attend Trawler school in Florida to learn more about handling and navigating a trawler, my first thought was… Ugh Boring!

Well I was so wrong. Captain Bob turned what could have been dull lessons into fun adventures. Within 2 hours from the first step aboard the Miami Mermaid we both were taking turns at the helm navigating the intercoastal going South. The next few days included boat classes on docking, navigating with charts, electrical and of course the engine room class. . We both feel totally prepared for bare-boat charting and even possibly purchasing a trawler in the future.

Highlights: Fish and shark jokes, docking blindfolded, grilled lobster on Key Biscayne, No Name Harbor, Super yummy food all home cooked on board, a new $2,000. vacuum flush toilet, perfect weather, night navigating, The Miami sky line at night, Our roommate Pee Wee Herman & Ariel the little Mermaid??? Much, Much more. Why did the Pirate wear an eye patch? Cuz he couldn’t afford an IPAD!!!

PS, Since completing our course, we have done two bareboat charter trip in the British Virgin Islands. The training we received from Captain Bob has given us the confidence to pursue these adventures. Thank you Captain & The Miami Mermaid

The Imperfect Storm … and other highlights from 2012

7/1/2012 – 7/5/2012

Captain Bob,

This trip was much more than we expected. We got such good experience that we will remember this trip for a long time. There were unexpected drills like MOB (man overboard) with a life jacket. It was fun, but also a great way to practice such important procedures. Our wives wanted us to come here to learn how to operate boats of this size so we can charter one in the future and we got the experience we needed.

Dear Capt. Bob,

It was a great experience. We got exactly what we came for and much, much more. I’m confident to charter the boat and share what you taught me with my wife and family. Thanks for a great time!

6/25/2012 – 6/29/2012

Captain Bob,

What a great adventure – we hit tropical storm Debbie enroute to the Miami Mermaid. We thought the weather would detract from our enjoyment and comfort on the trip, but you were able to accommodate every condition which only added to the fun and learning experience. The rough conditions we encountered on the first day gave us hands on experience in handling the Miami Mermaid in unusual conditions not seen in 7 years of charters. While Rich kept saying “I love this,” Susan was ready to find a calm anchorage and have a glass of wine. The next day we arrived in Boca Chita Key under windy conditions (kept the bugs away) but made docking practice difficult. We had arrived in paradise! After a magnificent sunset and a great meal (as they all were) we enjoyed relaxing with Capt. Bob and listening to the stories of his wonderful adventures. Keep dancing with those palm trees.

We learned so very much in such a short time. After researching a number of trawler schools with confusing pricing and fee structures, we found the perfect school with Captain Bob and the all inclusive price. Thanks for making it so easy!

An adventure we will never forget!

What an extraordinary experience we have had! As we planned for this great adventure our anticipation escalated. Arriving on the Miami Mermaid and meeting Capt. Bob we settled into the journey. Our first night out navigating through the ICW was exhilarating; we anchored and watched the sunset over Hollywood, FL. The next day navigating on to Boca Chita Key, learning to dock, and swimming in the refreshing clear water was beyond anything we could have imagined. The entire trip was so informative, entertaining, and relaxing. We had many hands-on learning from operating the trawler, navigation, docking, repairs, and classroom instruction. We received much information and now know our next step in bareboat chartering next summer. Thanks so much for the learning, great food, and the journey!

Leland & Karen – Marshall, TX

6/3/2012 – 6/7/2012

We learned so much! Trawler School was exactly the learning experience we needed and were hoping for. Thank you.

We certainly feel much better prepared for our eventual Great Loop adventure and I now am certain we can do it!

Thank you Captain Bob,

We had the pleasure of learning basic trawler boating with Captain Bob … and what an experience we had. Yes, Bob is a great cook, a wonderful teacher, and good cabin boy, and all that … But this captain is a master of the unexpected. We got caught in a sudden gale force wind and 4’ waves off Boca Chita – ‘The Imperfect Storm’. For 3+ hours, while we were below deck wondering if we’d survive (REALLY) Capt. Bob brought us through safely and with great poise.

For us, Bob’s patience with new boaters was a bonus, as we needed to learn slowly and Bob certainly accommodated that. All around, this was a wonderful learning experience and we recommend Bob 100%.

Great experience! Hell Yea!!!

Had to wait “five minutes” before we could board because the Captain was on his knees in “our bathroom” replacing the toilet seat. Didn’t know what to expect. Hell yea, the Captain of the Miami Mermaid, hand and knees working on the toilet. Then it was on to some “serious” business. Drop your luggage, take a walk, get something to eat, wow, a true captain- barking orders. After our walk on the beach, eating something, etc. We arrived back to the Mermaid and the order barking Captain Bob. After a well performed introduction and “trawler school training” agenda, no doubts remained that our captain was anything but professional (except his fish jokes). After leaving dock I was told to take the helm and “left” into the ICW. The greatest part of our trawler training was you Capt. Bob, with your vast experience and knowledge of operation, navigation and pros/cons of ownership versus “the final solution.” Hats off to a job well done. Janet and I have the confidence to operate and investigate a big boat (trawler) now. Enjoyed more than words can say!! Smooth trawling and don’t forget the breakfast …. thing. Comes in handy, more so than not. Hell yea!!

Ronnie & Janet – Portsmouth, VA

4/24/2012

WOW!! This was an awesome experience! Captain Bob is a gracious and accommodating host, great cook, informative instructor, and definitely an interesting character! This “excursion” was much more than we expected it to be. Besides learning how to maneuver the trawler, Capt. Bob instilled a confidence in me that made me want to know more. It has been one of the best vacations I have ever been on! Boca Chita was the best and seeing Miami from the water is probably the best way to experience Miami. Having the pleasure of watching both a sunrise and sunset at Boca Chita was breathtaking. OK, my primal scream the first night was a little over the top, but I’m glad Capt. Bob seemed to understand!

We can’t wait to implement the “Final Solution” and charter another trawler to build one experience and hopefully eventually purchase a boat of our own.

Thanks for everything! Hell Yeah!

Tammy & Bob

Dear Captain Bob,

Our experience aboard the Miami Mermaid was interesting, informative, fun and awesifying! Driving and docking our own trawler will be much less intimidating for me, and even my know-it-all husband leaned a few new things. Wonderful scenery, great meals, and fish tales made for an awesifying time! Was it worth doing? Hell yes!

Capt. Bob,

What a character! And pirate! And Teacher!

This was an amazing way to learn about being on a boat. I was reluctant, my husband was gung-ho, so we found Capt. Bob and scheduled our trip. I am confident we can charter a boat in many locations to build our knowledge and experience.

He uses a great teaching technique- show you, let you do it, corrects you when necessary. Invaluable if you are going to go it alone.

The scenery was beautiful, he is a good cook, and allowed us time to be alone, which made it feel like our baot and our time. We especially enjoyed the sunset and the skyline of Miami.

Ask lots of questions. He is a wealth of information and his knowledge invaluable.

Thanks for a fabulous 4 days Capt. Bob!

This was a confidence builder. Now it is not “I think I can” but “I can!” The whole idea of learning that the boat is a trawling island that takes us to point A to B without necessarily docking, but anchoring was enlightening. The class sessions were very informative, just be prepared for an occasional “Hell No” or maybe even a “Hell Yes?”

We have learned much about “Captain No-It-All (chart plotter) and how to depend on it with additional navigation skills that do not involve celestial navigation or longitude, latitude. The anchorages were magnificent and, normally, quite quiet. It was a great week that makes us anticipate our own adventures on our trawler! Thanks Captain Bob (oh the food was wonderful and the cabin a delight – but those thanks go to cabin boy Bob).

It’s amazing how much Captain Bob can teach you and re-teach you in two days. One of his secrets, I think, is that he has you jump right into it and lets you learn from your mistakes. His lectures are entertaining and informative. I like the fact that he doesn’t overdo it, but keeps it simple – even for a female who isn’t mechanical. In addition to the classes and what you’re learning, it’s a beautiful cruise with great food.

You have to watch out for his fish jokes, they are pretty corny! He has a good teaching style with repetition when needed. He didn’t like me taking notes in a notebook though.

We enjoyed ourselves and look forward to trying out our newly learned skills.

Captain Bob,

Your charter and Trawler School was the perfect gift for Jeff’s 60th birthday. We both learned a lot about navigation, chart plotting, diesel engines, electrical systems, and how to buy a trawler. On top of that, we ate well and saw sights in and around Miami that we never knew existed. We are already talking about taking a “bare boat” charter next year!

Jeff is extremely impressed that you taught me how to navigate, use a chart plotter and drive the Miami Mermaid under a bridge while another boat passing through as well.

Thank you so much for a wonderful time and a perfect present for Jeff.

Captain Bob,

Fantastic experience for two boating and trawler neophytes. The anchorages were remarkable and superseded only by the food! Captain Bob, more than just a superb trawler captain, but also a great chef, surprising us each day with restaurant meals at sea!

If/when we decide to buy a trawler the information we gained at trawler school charters will be invaluable. Captain Bob has a way of distilling complex subjects to the real “need to know” level for us rookies.

Very much appreciate the amount of helm time and navigation experience we gained. We feel confident entering the bare boat charter world.

In conclusion, do we have anything negative to say about Captain Bob or Trawler School charters? HELL NO!

Chris and I enjoyed our days and nights on the Miami Mermaid. Captain Bob gave us some valuable lessons on piloting a trawler. We came to “school” not knowing what to expect. We left with enough confidence to charter a trawler on our own in order to get some more hands-on experience.

The weather was perfect, the meals – delicious and the companionship unforgettable!

Thanks for the memories and the manatees, Capt. Bob

February 22, 2012

We had no idea what to expect when we first booked out Trawler School with Capt. Bob. A drill sergeant? Or a laid back Academic? After several days and nights we learned that Capt. Bob is part captain, part cook, part trawler expert, part tour guide, and part jokester. We learned everything we needed to know to charter our own boat and just as importantly we had a great time doing so. Among the highlights of our trip was the manatee at Jimbo’s. As someome who earns their living in the marine industry, I thought I pretty much knew it all. Boy, was I wrong. Capt. Bob taught us countless truths about operating and owning a trawler. We will never forget our Capt. Bob experience and will forever be grateful of the many things we learned. It was time very well spent! We loved sitting out on the sundeck in the evenings just relaxing and the night spend “on the hook” at Marine Stadium taking in the spectacular Miami skyline was fantastic. All the meals Capt. Bob prepared were absolutely delicious and perfectly satisfying. And the Miami Mermaid was very comfortable sleeping aboard. Thanks again for a great experience.

February 16, 2012

My son and I have just spent 3 days with Captain Bob aboard the Miami Mermaid. We are both crazy about baots and have had the idea of trawlering for quite some time. Bob gave us an extraordinary experience teaching us how to navigate and handle his trawler. As well, he gave us a good practical teaching on the maintenance and care involved in keeping a trawler in good repair. Finally, Bob went through the pros and cons of ownership and gave us great advice on how to proceed, if we want to buy a used trawler.

On top of all of the above, Bob is a great host and cook and made us feel “at home.”

Thanks for everything,

John

Captain Bob – you are a great “host”- your stories are worth the price and the knowledge, tips, and confidence building priceless, especially the simulated engine failure. We enjoyed the food and friendship. Despite a little rain we accomplished everything we wanted – your tips on boat buying are invaluable. We have owned boats before, and now wish we had met you first. Continued success in your trawler school.

Best wishes,

17 ft. Cuban Raft Discovered Adrift off Elliot Key, FL

A Dania Beach charter captain discovered a large well equipped 17′ Cuban raft filled with provisions and equipped with a 4 cylinder Russian diesel engine off of Eliot Key on Wednesday, May16th, 2012.

Captain Bob Hamilton, on board the Miami Mermaid, owner of Trawler School Charters, a boat handling Trawler school based in Dania Beach, FL,

was not sure whether anyone was still on board the obviously homemade craft when he first encountered it at a distance. Hamilton believes that at least 11 people used the raft to sail to Florida. According to Hamilton, there were 8 adult sized oars, 2 child sized oars and a baby basket on the craft. There was also canned food and 15 gallons of diesel fuel, 10 gallons of water, hypodermic needle’s and a IV bag on board. The location was reported to the USCG and pictures of the raft were e-mailed. “The passenger on board obviously planned well for their voyage” and either unloaded on a Fl Key Island or picked up by another boat for hopefully a safe arrival for all on board, said Hamilton.
